Longarm quilting - overview

Q: What is longarm quilting?

A: Longarm quilting uses a specialist sewing machine to stitch the layers of a quilt together. The longarm machine has a large throat space and is mounted on a frame. This allows the machine to stitch in vertical and horizontal directions while the fabric stays in one place.

Q: What are the benefits of using a longarm quilting service?

A: There are several advantages of using a longarm quilting service rather than doing your own quilting at home by hand or using your domestic sewing machine. You can choose from a wide variety of quilting designs and expect professional results with even and consistent quilting every time. It also means that you can leave the hassle of dealing with all that bulky fabric to someone else.

Q: How do I know if my quilt is suitable for longarm quilting?

A: Almost all quilts are suitable for longarm quilting. However, it’s important to ensure that your quilt top is properly prepared and is free from significant issues such as wavy edges or loose seams.

Q: How can I prepare my quilt for longarm quilting?

A: To prepare your quilt for longarm quilting, make sure your quilt top is properly pressed, squared, and free of loose threads or embellishments. If you are supplying them, ensure that you provide an adequate amount of batting and backing fabric (please allow for an extra 4″ on each side of the quilt). It is also important to discuss any special instructions or preferences with your quilter to ensure that the outcome matches your expectations.
